Surfactants used in formulation of niosomes
Dr. BV Ramana and Pedda Putakala Akshaya
A new method for delivering medicines is called niosomes. In this method, the drug is enclosed in a small vesicle made of a bilayer of non-ionic surfactants and cholesterol. Niosomes are preferred over liposomes because they are more stable, cheaper, and easier to make. They can carry both oil-loving (lipophilic) and water-loving (amphiphilic) drugs.
Niosomes are biodegradable, flexible, safe, and do not cause immune reactions. They are useful for delivering medicines to specific parts of the body.
This review explains the structure, composition, types, methods of preparation, advantages, disadvantages, and uses of niosomes
