Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest, and reduced ability to function. It affects over 300 million people globally and is a leading cause of disability. This review examines the clinical features, epidemiology, pathophysiology, types and treatment of depression. Neurobiological factors include imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, and structural changes in brain areas such as the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Depression has various forms, including major depressive disorder, bipolar depression, and postpartum depression. Management includes antidepressants, psychotherapy, and emerging treatments like music therapy. A personalized, multidisciplinary approach is crucial for effective care and reducing the burden of depression worldwide.
